Ya got me misty over here Alison.

I can't say I've ever seen anyone I know (or anyone I don't) with a pet greyhound. So this was pretty novel for me. Loved the pics, by the way.

This is the part where I make an annoying suggestion: have you ever tried collagen supplements with Reubs? Worked a miracle on my bum knee, for what it's worth. And didn't take long.

I've been to a few dog races here in Florida. Never thought much about what happens to the dogs when they're done racing. Maybe because I didn't want to know.

Long live Reubs.

Thank you :) The vet gave us some sort of granules to help build him up but I'll definitely look into collagen, appreciate the suggestion. The industry in Aus is notoriously awful, genuinely cruel, but it may be different in America.

The last of our dogs have crossed the rainbow bridge and at our age we are reluctant to get another as it will outlive us. We have cats. They adopt us. Twice we have had one waltz thru the pet flap in the back yard and go sit on a sofa. We have one feral who had kittens in the storage shed. We brought the box of kittens in, and she overcame her terror and came in. We thought she would return to the wild and had her spayed and ear clipped (a sign of a neutered feral). She lives with us ;0) She sometimes rubs my legs as I prepare her pate in the morning, but she will never let us pet or pick her up.

Dogs and cats are family. They have personalities and feeling. We are their world so we try to make it a good world.

That last line sums it up. I also don't think we'll get another pet after this, losing them is just too much.

What a beautiful story, Al. The pics brought tears to my eyes. Yes, what love can do. Something similar happened several years back with one of our passed, beloved kitties, but it hurts to much to talk about. Maybe one day. Bless you and your family for bringing Reuben into your home and hearts. And fuck those bastards who abused him and who continue to abuse helpless creatures. May they burn in hell.

Our Airedale Griffin was in a similar situation. He had a heart murmur and the vet said, due to it, the arthritis medication would shorten his life. We opted to give it to him because less time without pain seemed the better choice. My son had been away at camp when he really started to fail. The day my son came home, we called to Griffin to let him know his buddy was back. He didn’t come. We found him on the patio. He was gone, but only just. It was a very hot day and there was a wet puddle of drool under his muzzle on the bricks. I believe Griffin hung in there until my son got home and as soon as he heard his voice, he died.

Oh, that's heartbreaking Denise. I am so sorry.

Thanks. It wasn’t a bad way to go, though. It turned into a bit of a farce because he died on a Friday evening so I had to wrap him in trash bags and duct tape and keep his body on ice until someone from the shelter could pick it up. I felt like a serial killer.

Poor wee chap, and poor you, that’s just really hard.

Weirdly, I looked into our smallish chest freezer earlier tonight, pulling out an icy pole (popsicle, maybe, in the USA) and was thinking that you could just about fit one body in parts in there, but you’d have to pull everything out first. It later occured to me, somewhat to my relief, that I read a tweet from someone saying they were watching Dexter for the first time, so hopefully that explains that.

Sorry, this sounds extremely thoughtless. Just 2.25am thoughts.

Not at all. It was a long time ago and I think a bit of gallows humor is healthy.

Horse and greyhound racing have many things in common- not the least of which is the lack of concern for the animals when they become of no "use" to those controlling the sport.

Those who appear to be human, who do this to animals through choice, are not the same species as the rest of us, I'm afraid.
